Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. For millions of Christians throughout the world it is the happiest and the busiest time of the year. No one knows the exact date of Christ’s birth, but most Christians celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.
Host 2:
People of different countries celebrate Christmas in various ways. But most of people decorate homes with Christmas trees and ornaments. The streets are filled with coloured lights; the sound of bells and Christmas carols can be heard everywhere.

Host 1:
Mary and Joseph were Christ’s parents. They went to Bethlehem. Their way was dangerous and very long. It was getting darker and darker.
Host 2:
They didn’t know where to go. A lot of bright stars appeared in the sky. Suddenly Mary saw a cave. “Let’s have a sleep in this place”, she said to her husband.
Host 1:
At last they found a place where Mary gave a birth to her child. He was a boy.
Host 2:
A lot of people came to see him. They brought many presents for him.
Host 1:
Many bright stars appeared in the sky when the Christ was born. But among them was the biggest and the brightest star that showed the way to his place of birth.

The English enjoy beautiful Christmas music. They love to decorate Christmas Trees and hang up evergreen branches.

In England the traditional Christmas dinner is roast turkey with vegetables and sauces. For dessert it is rich, fruity Christmas pudding with brandy sauce, mince pies, pastry cases filled with a mixture of chopped dried fruit.

The English gift giver is called Father Christmas. He wears a long red or green robe, and leaves presents in stockings on Christmas Eve. In England also they elect Boy Bishops in commemoration of St. Nicholas compassion for children.

In Germany Christmas preparations often begin on the eve of December the 6th. People often set aside special evenings for baking spiced cakes and cookies, and making gifts and decorations. Little dolls of fruit are traditional Christmas toys.

Children leave letters on their windowsills for Christkind, a winged figure dressed in white robes and a golden crown who distributes gifts.

People hang up advent wreaths of Holly with four red candles in the center. They light one candle each Sunday and last on Christmas Eve.

In Poland, Advent is the beginning of Christmas Time. It's a time when people try to be peaceful and remember the real reason for Christmas.
Host 2:
At the beginning of the meal, a large wafer biscuit called an 'Oplatek', which has a picture of Mary, Joseph and Jesus on it, is passed around the table and everyone breaks a piece off and eats it. A place is often left empty at the meal table, for the Christ Child. The meal consists of 12 dishes of mostly fish (as meat used to be forbidden), mushrooms, puddings and cake.

In Ukraine Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. Sviata Vecheria, or Holy Supper, is the main tradition in Ukrainian homes. The head of the family brings in a sheaf of wheat called the didukh. When the Ukrainians see the first Star in the eastern evening sky, Sviata Vecheria begins.

People usually lay the table with 12 meatless and milkless dishes. «Kutya» is a traditional Ukrainian Christmas dish. At the end of Sviata Vecheria the family often sing koliadkas, Ukrainian Christmas Carols.
